The fig tree is deciduous.

It loses all leaves in autumn and, depending on the location and year, sprouts again relatively late in April / May.

We ask for your understanding that the plant looks different than on the photos taken in the shop in summer.

Despite its leafless condition, it is a healthy and vital plant.

If a visit is not possible, you can make your own decision about your fig variety in the online shop.

We try to send the plants within 5 to a maximum of 10 working days after the order / receipt of payment.

Some varieties can only be ordered and shipped from mid-May / June.

You will receive the culture descriptions "The potted fig culture" and "The planted fig tree" with the delivery of the plants.

( Pre-orders and scheduled shipping for a later date are not possible for organizational reasons.

For some types only limited quantities are available.)

Which plant / variety
is suitable for my climate?

The desire to expand the garden as a living room and to bring Mediterranean flair into the garden, even to harvest tropical fruits

is trendy. Global warming is also giving us wings

Cultivate Mediterranean plants in Central Europe.

Whether a plant is thriving and the local winter

able to survive depends on the hardiness of winter

also of a number of location factors such as sun exposure, soil type, soil structure, humus content, nutrient supply,

Water supply, shoot closure, weather conditions in autumn and winter, duration of exposure to temperature, humidity and, most importantly, the wind or wind protection.

Often the question arises whether the plant is hardy in one place.
There are considerable climatic differences within Austria.

In connection with the Austria map or the Central Europe map by Heinze and Schreiber (1984) it can be derived

in which zone the plant should survive a normal "average winter" with a probability of at least 80%.
(Based on the USDA map, US Department of Agriculture).

The stated winter hardiness only refers

on planted fig bushes.

The regional and microclimate

Not just the macroclimate, but

The regional and microclimate conditions are also often decisive.

Think of sheltered areas

in courtyards.

Relatively mild areas can be found in valleys

of large rivers, the heat islands

of the big cities by their buildings

also act as heat storage. Industrial influence also heats up.

The result is a desert-like urban climate.

Lower winter hardiness zones than in the surrounding area are in unfavorable valley locations

with cold air lakes often.

These zone divisions are only guidelines and do not represent an absolute value.

They are an important guide / indicator for the possibility of cultivating plants in certain regions.

Location example zone temperature label color

Lunz 6a -22 ° C (-23.3 to -20.5C *) red

Klagenfurt 6b -19 ° C (-20.4 to -17.8 ° C *) blue / pink

Passau 7a -16 ° C (-17.7 to -15 ° C *) purple / green

Vienna 7b -13 ° C (-14.9 to -12.3 ° C *) orange

Bozen 8a -10 ° C (-12.2 to -9.5 ° C *) yellow

* The temperature data refer to:

_ the mean annual minimum air temperature.

_ Plants planted out, not on potted plants.

Winter protection

With winter protection, plants can also survive in a cooler zone

With the help of winter protection measures (covering with leaves or fleece), the site conditions can be determined

Improve it so that plants that are more sensitive in one zone can get through the winter unharmed.

Planting in front of a wall - higher total heat - more yield

However, the total heat during the growth phase is also decisive for a rich fruit yield.

An east to southwest wall can increase growth and yield many times over.

In addition to the reflection of the radiation, this "sun trap" takes over both in summer

as well as the function of wind protection in winter.

Over the course of the year, planting on the east side is even preferable,

because the morning sun activates the plant a little earlier every day.
